Senior Data Engineer (Microsoft Fabric & Power BI)
Qbitech is looking for a Senior Data Engineer with deep Microsoft Fabric and Power BI expertise to help build a new analytics platform for a large UK enterprise. The platform underpins the organisation's international revenue assurance work, where data arrives from many external source systems in differing formats and has to be reconciled into reporting that the business can trust.
You will work as an embedded member of the client's scrum team, alongside their technical team lead and scrum master, on an agile sprint-based delivery with daily stand-ups and regular ceremonies. The role covers the full path from ingestion to insight: Fabric pipelines, Lakehouse and OneLake solutions, semantic models, and the Power BI dashboards and Copilot experiences built on top of them.
This is a contract engagement running to the end of December 2026, on a programme that continues into 2027.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, test and maintain end-to-end data pipelines using Microsoft Fabric
- Develop and manage data ingestion, transformation and loading across multiple source systems
- Create and optimise Fabric Lakehouse and OneLake-based solutions for analytics use cases
- Build and maintain semantic models and reporting components in Fabric Power BI
- Leverage Power BI Copilot for natural-language query use cases
- Develop interactive dashboards and reports that meet business and operational requirements
- Write efficient SQL, DAX and PySpark notebook transformations for scalable reporting solutions
- Plan and execute system testing across data and reporting components
- Work with business stakeholders, analysts and technical teams to translate requirements into data solutions
- Build within data quality, governance, security and documentation standards across the platform
- Support deployment, release management and continuous improvement of the analytics environment
Requirements
- Strong experience as a Senior Data Engineer, BI Engineer or in a similar data-focused role
- Hands-on Microsoft Fabric experience, including Data Factory, PySpark, Lakehouse and OneLake
- Strong Power BI skills: semantic modelling, DAX, Copilot and dashboard development
- Proficiency in SQL, with solid data modelling fundamentals such as star schema and dimensional modelling
- Python or PySpark for data transformation and engineering tasks
- Good understanding of ETL/ELT design patterns, data integration and orchestration
- Experience with performance tuning, monitoring and troubleshooting across data and reporting solutions
- Understanding of data governance, security and access controls for enterprise analytics platforms
- Familiarity with version control, testing and deployment processes
- Experience of system test planning and execution
- Strong communication skills, comfortable with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Microsoft certifications in Fabric or Power BI are a plus
